The term Internet of Things (IoT) is used to describe the everyday devices that are connected to the internet.

IoT device examples

Anything connected to the internet is vulnerable to hacking if proper protections are not in place. Always remember to change the default credentials on your IoT devices and create strong passwords. And remember to update the software on your IoT devices if updates become available.

Lifecycle of an IoT device

It’s important to consider security for your IoT devices at every stage of their lifecycle, from selecting the product, to daily use, and right up to its disposal.

Here are a few things to consider at each stage:

Choose a product that emphasizes security, and give preference to devices with security features built-in
Choose a device that allows you to decide whether or not the company shares your data
Choose a device that receives software updates directly from the manufacturer
Consider whether the device fits your needs - do you need this device to be connected to the internet?

Update the default username and passwords upon set-up
Use strong passwords and don’t share them with unauthorized users. Never share your banking passwords with anyone.
Never use the same password for multiple IoT devices
Monitor the permissions used by the device and do not give it access to more information than it requires to function
Set up a guest Wi-Fi network and connect your IoT devices to it
Make sure to manage the security on your home router and enable encryption and strong passwords to protect it
Check your internet data usage for significant changes
Turn off the device if you are not using it
Use multifactor authentication (MFA) and biometric authentication, such as facial recognition or fingerprint detection, whenever possible
